Service Through the Eyes of Jesus

When Jesus spoke about being a servant of God, He was not describing someone who simply stays busy with religious work.

He was describing a life surrendered to the Father.

Jesus showed us that true service begins with love, humility, and obedience. He did not serve to gain attention, praise, status, or power. He served because He loved God and He loved people.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”— Mark 10:45

Jesus healed the sick, welcomed children, fed the hungry, touched those others avoided, and listened to people the world had overlooked. He knelt to wash His disciples’ feet, taking the position of the lowest servant in the room.

Through His example, Jesus taught that no act of love is beneath us.

Being a servant of God means asking, “How can I reflect the heart of Jesus here?”

Sometimes service looks like feeding someone who is hungry. Sometimes it is visiting someone who is lonely, comforting a grieving heart, forgiving an offence, or quietly helping without expecting recognition.

Service is not about being seen as a good Christian. It is about helping others see Christ through the way we love them.

Jesus also showed us that service requires surrender. In the garden of Gethsemane, He prayed:

“Not my will, but yours be done.”— Luke 22:42

A servant of God does not merely ask God to bless their own plans. A servant asks God to guide their steps, shape their attitude, and use their life for His purposes.

This does not mean neglecting ourselves or allowing others to mistreat us. Jesus served faithfully, but He also withdrew to pray, rested when needed, and maintained healthy boundaries.

True Christian service flows from our relationship with God. We first sit at His feet, receive His love, and then carry that love into the world.

It is not always glamorous.

It is not always convenient.

But every time we choose love over pride, compassion over judgment, and obedience over recognition, we become more like Him.
